Mostar Shopping Guide

Kujundziluk Street is one of the most popular places to shop in Mostar, especially in Turkish style souvenir shops. It is located on the eastern edge of the Neretva River, which flows downhill toward the Mostar Old Bridge. As you walk down this street, you will be transported back in time. There is stone structures wherever you look. There is ancient, cold stone below your feet and even on the walls all around. There is an abundance of local handicrafts and items of tourist interest in this part of Mostar. Many shops along the street are run by local artisans. They sell handicrafts such as rugs, objects made from copper, jewellery and paintings. It is a true shopper's paradise, even if you are not Turkish.

Please remember to ask the shopkeeper specifically for items made in Mostar or Bosnia and Herzegovina. Most of the souvenirs you will find in Mostar shops belong to other countries, especially Turkey.

Dishes made of copper specifically date back to the Turkish ruling period. These are made by the engravers in their small shops in parts of the Old City, mostly in Kujundziluk. They make saucers, goblets and dishes for Turkish coffee. You can also buy products directly from the homes of the local people. Tablecloths can be seen being made on the streets or sold from the primitive makeshift ‘shops' in their homes. You will find many crotchet tablecloths with traditional motifs.

There is a very nice carpet gallery next to Koskin-Mehmed Pash'a mosque, where oriental carpets can be found. These are finely crafted with oriental motifs and are small in size, so you can easily take them home with you.

Currency in Mostar

Mostar trades in the Bosnia & Herzegovinian Konvertible Mark (KM), 1 KM is equivalent to 0.50 EUR. Bosnia and Herzegovina is mostly a "cash only" economy. Traveller's cheques are exchanged only at select banks. You can easily get around with paying EURO.
