Getting to Mostar by Train Travel
Trains between Sarajevo and Mostar are not frequent but this 2-3 hour journey is just as spectacular as the bus trip. It is also cheaper than travelling by bus to Mostar. These trains leave both in the morning and in the evening. Travelling by train is also interesting as it passes through rugged terrain with a series of tunnels, U-turns and aqueducts.
Compared to the buses, the trains used to be quite empty but this no longer seems to be the case. Now, travellers will be lucky to find a seat during peak hours. However, please note that the trains and the facilities on the stations are rather outdated. Buses provide a more comfortable journey.
If you are travelling from Sarajevo to Mostar by train, they depart around two or three times a day. One train service, usually in the evening, passes through Zagreb on the way to Ploce on the Adriatic coast in southern Croatia. This journey takes around 90 minutes. The timing is not particularly convenient, so many people use the more frequent buses. There are also a lot of buses to Medjugorje (1 hour away) and at least two buses a day to Dubrovnik.
Getting to Mostar by Car Travel
Bosnia is a beautiful country to drive through as the scenery is spectacular. However, due to the mountainous terrain, poor condition of roads across the country and atrocious drivers who dangerously overtake on narrow highways, speeds are slow even on the shortest distance ‘as the crow flies'.
Getting Around Mostar
Most points of interest are within walking distance from the Old Town and you are unlikely to use much public transport within Mostar itself. Mostar is well connected with nearby towns and villages via local bus routes. Many of the buses start from opposite the bus station. Blagaj (30 minutes) and Podvelezje (1 hour) are both covered via these routes. You can spot the local buses miles away across the rocky countryside - they are painted a bright yellow with Japanese flags on them (donated after the war).
